Day after day, we at Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) witness
firsthand the problems that arise when access to health care and
information is restricted. Our patients include women who face unintended
pregnancies because they could not access birth control, teens diagnosed
with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) due to a lack of medically-accurate
sex education, and women who have gone years without basic gynecological
care because they were unable to afford this potentially life-saving
service.
Through our Public Affairs Department, PPNC advocates for pro-family,
pro-choice policies that support family planning, promote medically-accurate,
responsible sexuality education in the schools, and preserve women’s
reproductive rights.
However, as a tax-exempt, 501 (c)(3) agency, PPNC’s influence over
the political arena can only go so far. As a result, there are still many
anti-choice legislators here in Nassau County, in New York State and in
the federal government. While we do everything possible to educate
them, many continue to vote in favor of legislation that is detrimental
to the reproductive freedoms we cherish.
Until the current assault on choice is halted and our legislators change
their votes, we must do everything we can to elect officials who will
support access to the health care services and programs that help women,
men and teens make responsible decisions in their lives.
That is why the Board of Directors of PPNC voted to establish the Planned
Parenthood of Nassau County Action Fund (PPNCAF). As a 501(c)(4),
this lobbying arm of our agency is allowed to conduct more aggressive
and outwardly pro-choice political activities, including:
-
Lobbying without financial limitations
-
Identifying voters who support pro-choice positions
-
Distributing information about candidates' positions on our issues
-
Endorsing candidates
-
Conducting independent expenditure campaigns
-
Conducing get-out-the-vote campaigns
Due to the political nature of our work, donations are NOT tax-deductible.
